VEN (OMO) US
The performance resume an ancient therapeutic ritual in use in southern Italy called "Tarantismo".
The "Tarantula" is the animal that symbolizes the shady side of human nature and the wounds of the soul.
Through a catharsis the performer revisits her inner life, leaving then herself to fall into a trance, through which, with the help of two energetic helpers, in the guise of shamanic priestesses, interacts with her inner spiders, projecting them out of herself, to crush them, through a repetitive motion of the feet that beat the floor, as if to ward off the Tarantula and with it the conventional pain and anguish.
The ritual involves the close and intimate participation of the public which is found to be involved in actions such as playing the drums, to incite, to use the props for functional purposes to the success of the ritual.
Accompanying the performer to her release, the audience so intimately involved in the ritualistic process will end to take full relief and benefit at the end of the ritual, discovering the hidden capacity in each of uplift and heal the identity.
The strong, earthly intensity of the movements, the atmospheres full of tension and the heavy beats of the feet on the ground are enhanced by images that are projected as electric shock into the surrounding space and the sounds and noises such as songs and inner laments meet and collide in a mix of voices, whistling and beating of drums.
At the end of the ritual, the performer will lie on the ground becoming an integral part of the context and creating a living installation with which the public can interact.
In this way was born the necessity to sensitize the audience on those natural and traditional therapeutic processes
aimed at the inner liberation, intending them as vital to the achievement of a strong identity and of a real individual freedom.
VEN(OMO)US is a theatrical production integrating movement, video/projection and poetry written and choreographed by C.M.Ceci, whose work and research is culminating with this performance.

My goal is to create work that is accessible to all kinds of people – work that straddles many of the gaps that keep people apart. I want to make art that activates thought and incites investigation. In this way, I am interested in art as a form of activism, art that constantly serves a higher purpose - calling how we live and participate in the world into question.
This project is my first endeavor toward a full evening work. It tackles issues I find both relevant and significant - a real individual freedom as it pertains to both women and men, how expectations and fear influence and affect our identity, and how that in turn affects the way we view and master our lives in the society.
